Many owners of small businesses believe that it is not necessary to have website. After all, their business is small and gets most of its clients through word-of-mouth or from traditional advertising. So is a website really necessary?
I often hear the question asked: “Is it really necessary for a small business to have a website?” The answer is “Absolutely!”
The internet has taken on a very dominant role in our lives, and is rapidly replacing many traditional ways of dealing with information. Not many business people use the hardcopy Yellow Pages to find service providers anymore. It is just so much easier to look it up on Google. And the best thing is that you can do it on your smart-phone or tablet while you are on the move.
This is exactly why you need a website, even if you are a small business. If you are still getting the majority of new business enquries by word of mouth or through you weekly newspaper advert, then it might not seem like you need a website. You may conclude that a website will add very little value and not even bring you any real sales. It’s just too expensive and cumbersome…
This might have been true a few years ago, but if you are thinking this way right now you are heading for some serious trouble – just like the melting polar ice caps that we all took for granted a few years ago!
For a moment, consider what would happen to your business if your competitors saw the light and had client-focused websites created for their own businesses. In the beginning you would hardly notice, but as their website presence starts to increase in volume and quality, those ice caps under your feet would start getting thinner and thinner. You see, every time somebody uses Google to look for a service provider like you, they will be provided with a list of possibilities. You might be the best service provider in your area, but the prospect will not find you because you are not on the list. Instead they will be taken to your competitor’s website where they are going to find exactly what they are looking for. The impact on your business could be catastrophic.
Well, at least you have your existing customers, right? Unfortunately, that might also not be true for much longer. As your competitors start getting better at using the internet for advertising and marketing they will start actively targeting people that are in the market for their services and products. Who do you think those people are? Yes, you are right: they are YOUR customers…
If you are in business and you don’t yet have a website with meaningful content, you need to act NOW! Don’t risk extinction! Start making enquiries right now and bring your business into the 21st century.
