Your company website needs to be maintanined every now and again, with the view to keep it fresh and interesting. If you don't do this, you risk being relegated to file 13 in most people's (and search engines') minds. Here's how.
When last did you paint your house?
As time goes by the paint on your house starts fading, peeling and cracking. A bit of damp may set in and you know very well that there are a few places where you need to replace some woodwork or do rust treatment.
Your company website is pretty similar. It might have looked wonderful, bright and crispy when it was built, but as time goes by and trends change your website can quickly start looking jaded and old. This is not very good for business and it is not very good for the way you feel about the value of your site either. What you need is a new coat of paint and maybe a bit of repairwork.
Here are some easy to implement tips that can make a big difference:
The trend in the past was to jam pack the front page of a website with information. It had to look BUSY, because that meant that you had a lot to say and that your site was important.
However, the trend nowadays is to simplify the frontpage to just one or a few important themes or links. This makes it easier for a visitor to get to grips with your site and what your company is about. Try visiting www.apple.com and see the simplicity and clear focus by one of the world's most advanced IT companies.
Have a look at the content on your own frontpage. What info can you drop? What info can you add? How can you present your visitor with the most important aspects of your offering?
Go through your website and check for obvious housekeeping issues. Your site may have been technically correct when you launched it, but is this still the case?
Your website developer should be able to "re-skin" your site. This means that they can keep all the content intact and just change the layout of the pages, the colour scheme and the fonts. This is almost the same as buying a new rug and curtains for your lounge. It is still the same room, but it looks new and bright.
Write a new article for your site. If you have not been very active for some time on your site then there are probably lots of things for you to write about. Have you launched a new product? Have you added a service? Has something happened in your industry? Do you have some tips that could assist your clients and prospects? Content is what will encourage people to visit your site, so look for things that will add value and make it available.
